Check out the new self-service bicycle safety repair station on campus

There's a new bicycle safety repair station on campus at the intersection of Galvez Mall and Escondido in front of the Galvez module. The bike safety repair station offers free tools to enable bicyclists to make minor repairs and pump up their tires, making it more convenient for the campus community to keep their bicycles in good working condition. Multiple tools are securely fastened to the rack, which also serves as a bike stand. A second location is planned for the area near the School of Medicine by the end of December.

Please send comments, questions, or suggestions about biking or the new bike safety repair station to bike-information@stanford.edu.

New ZIP code policy for 2010 Caltrain GO Pass and VTA Eco Pass eligibility

Stanford will continue to offer the free Caltrain GO Pass and VTA Eco Pass for 2010 to eligible university and/or hospital employees as part of the university's efforts to reduce peak-hour commute trips under Stanford's General Use Permit (GUP). (For information about the GUP, visit http://transportation.stanford.edu/images/GUP_FAQs.pdf).

The 2010 Caltrain GO Pass will be available to university employees who live off Stanford property (outside of 94304, 94305, and 94309 ZIP codes and within commute range of Stanford's main campus), work 20 hours or more per week, receive regular university benefits, and are at Stanford primarily for employment. The VTA Eco Pass is available to university and hospital employees who meet all of the preceding eligibility requirements. Other restrictions apply. For full eligibility information, visit http://transportation.stanford.edu/alt_transportation/EcoPass.shtml.

The 2010 Caltrain GO Pass and VTA Eco Pass are expected to be available for distribution to eligible Stanford employees in early December. Please watch for the November or December eUpdate for the distribution date.

ZIP Code Eligibility Restriction and Enforcement for 2010 Passes

In the past, employees whose ZIP code was 94304, 94305, 94309, or blank in Stanford's HR database were allowed to receive the pass(es) if they showed proof of residence in the form of a current lease agreement or utility bill that confirmed they resided in an eligible ZIP code (off Stanford property). Beginning with the 2010 pass programs, proof of residence will no longer be accepted for these ZIP codes, and no exceptions can be made.

If you have questions or need more information, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

Have you seen the new Stanford Marguerite hybrid buses?

On Oct. 1, Stanford rolled out two new diesel-electric hybrid buses in its Marguerite bus fleet. The new buses are one of the many ways Stanford's award-winning transportation program is reducing Stanford's carbon footprint.

If you spot the Marguerite hybrid bus, take and submit a high-resolution photograph by Nov. 30, 2009, and your photo may be featured on the next Marguerite shuttle schedule. (Other Stanford Marguerite photos are welcome and will be considered for future schedule publication.) Winners will receive $100 cash or smaller gift card prizes. To enter the photo contest, visit the Marguerite photo contest page: http://transportation.stanford.edu/photo.

The new Marguerite hybrid buses are much quieter and 40 percent more fuel-efficient than Stanford's regular diesel buses. The regenerative braking system kicks in each time the driver lifts his or her foot from the accelerator, helping to recharge the onboard batteries. The regenerative braking system also helps to slow the bus, dramatically extending the life of the brake pads. To see photos of Stanford's hybrid buses in production, visit the Marguerite photo contest web page: http://transportation.stanford.edu/photo.

For questions or comments about the Marguerite, send an email to marguerite@stanford.edu.
