Potential BART strike in July depending on union contract negotiations
If BART and its workers are unable to reach agreement on a new labor union contract, there is a possibility that BART service could be stopped as early as July 10. Oakland International Airport also plans to suspend AirBART operations in the event of a BART work stoppage.
Although the contract ended on June 30, contracts between BART and several of its unions have been extended nine days past the June 30 contract expiration. The extension means that the contracts would end at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, July 9.
Those who take BART as part of their commute to Stanford may want to consider alternatives to BART in the event of a strike. P&TS offers the following services:
- Commute planning assistance. Send us your starting and ending addresses and your typical schedule, and we can offer suggestions for transit or bike route alternatives to BART. Please mention "BART alternatives" when you contact us at commuteclub@stanford.edu.
- Stanford Ridematching Services. You can choose to carpool with Stanford affiliates only or request ride matches with the broader Bay Area community. Once you receive a match, you choose whether to contact the individual or accept the ride or rider. Sign up on the Zimride at Stanford website or visit the Stanford Ridematching Services page for more carpooling options and information.
If you decide to drive alone or carpool, you may want to consider driving during off-peak hours if possible, since traffic may be worse than usual if there is a strike. (Peak hours at Stanford are from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.)

Caltrain staff revise recommendations on proposed Caltrain changes
Earlier this month, Caltrain staff modified their recommendation to the Caltrain Board of Directors regarding fare and service changes. They continue to recommend reducing weekday midday service to one hour headways, increasing the GO Pass price from two zones to three zones, and increasing parking fees to $3 a day and $30 a month.
Caltrain staff recommended against further consideration of fare increases, suspension of weekend and Gilroy service, and onboard bicycle fees. The board received public comment on June 4 and is expected to take action at a meeting tentatively scheduled for the end of June.
Parking & Transportation Services plans to keep university GO Pass holders apprised of any changes to the pass program. To contact Caltrain, send an email to changes@caltrain.com. To contact Stanford, send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

Zimride offers iPod and $50 gas card incentives
Zimride at Stanford is a carpool application that makes it easier to share your commute or one-time trips with other members of the Stanford community – and you no longer need a Facebook account to use it. Zimride can now be used with or without Facebook.
Users who post their commute or even post one-time rides or requests before June 30 will be entered to win a $50 gas card or an iPod shuffle from Zimride.
There are more than 2,000 Stanford Zimride users. Here's how it works. Have a car or a Zipcar reservation? Add your ride offer and reduce your costs by sharing your ride with fellow Stanford affiliates. Don't have a car? Add your ride request and find a ride where you need to go. With Zimride, you choose whether or not to accept a match once you review the profile of your ride match.

Marguerite Downtown Express discontinued
As of June 15, the Marguerite Downtown Express shuttle was discontinued. This action was taken due to low ridership and the frequent service provided by Marguerite Lines A and B to the Palo Alto Transit Center (located adjacent to downtown Palo Alto). This decision is in keeping with the university's commitment to fiscal responsibility and environmental sustainability goals. If you need assistance identifying alternative options, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu or call 650.723.9362.
