1) Residents and commuters: Do you have your 2009-10 parking permits?

New permits required as of Sept. 1; citations are being issued for non-compliance

If you are a resident or commuter who is parking a vehicle in areas that require a Stanford parking permit, be sure you are displaying the proper 2009-10 permit to avoid a citation. Parking permits for the new fiscal year may be purchased online, and all customers have the option to select "will call" for faster pick up. Customers usually are notified of "will call" availability within three business days.

The "mail option" may be selected by off-campus students and employees to avoid a trip to the Parking & Transportation Services (P&TS) office. Please note that it can take up to seven business days to receive a permit in the mail, so if you need one sooner, purchase your permit in person at the P&TS office.

Place your order online at http://transportation.stanford.edu/orders or purchase your permit in person at the P&TS office located at 340 Bonair Siding, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Before you purchase a commuter permit, consider joining the Commute Club, which pays up to $282 per year in Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit to those who don’t drive alone to Stanford. If you are a current Commute Club member, be sure to re-enroll for 2009-10 to continue your membership, since Commute Club memberships do not automatically renew.

For questions about parking permits, send an email to transportation@stanford.edu. For questions about the Commute Club, send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

2) New Zimride features make it easier to share your commute

Post a ride and you could win a $50 gas card from Zimride

Zimride, Stanford’s social network for ridesharing, is making it even easier to share your commute by rolling out new features in its ridematching system. As an additional bonus, if you add your ride offer or request before Nov. 27, you will be entered to win a $50 gas card from Zimride: http://zimride.stanford.edu.

Zimride offers a new set of features, including the following:

- Match list. Your commute match list provides mapped information about ride matches in an easy to read format, so you can see matches along and around your commute route.

- Match alerts. You will be alerted whenever a new ride is added that matches your posting.

- Time flexibility. You can now specify when you want to leave and how much (or little) flexibility you have in your schedule.

If you have a car, you’ll be able to share your ride and the costs. If you don’t have a car, Zimride is a great way to arrange a ride with others in the Stanford community. If you and your ride match both have cars, you could alternate driving, giving the passenger more time to read, relax, or pursue other interests.

3) Stanford offers bicycle safety classes every month

The information could save your life; the next classes are Sept. 30, Oct. 12, and Oct. 26

Do you ride a bicycle at Stanford or are you thinking of riding? Stanford's bicycle safety class is for you, and it's not too late to register for the next class on Sept. 30, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Parking & Transportation Services office. October classes are scheduled for Oct. 12 and Oct. 26.

The class is a quick and effective way to learn the rules of the road and to hear bicycle tips that will help you be a better rider (and driver) and could save your life as a cyclist. Don't take our word for it. Here's what some attendees have said about the class:

"Excellent presentation; will wear a helmet from now on."
"It really makes you think."
"This program should be mandatory for freshmen."

In the pilot classes, 100 percent of participants said they learned something new, and 100 percent said they would recommend it to friends. The one-hour classes include a presentation, video, and question-and-answer discussion. The class is co-taught by Deputy Allen James of Stanford's Department of Public Safety and Ariadne Scott, Stanford's bicycle program coordinator in Parking & Transportation Services.

To register and for information about dates and times of classes, visit the Department of Public Safety website: http://www.stanford.edu/group/SUDPS/bicycle.shtml#diversion. For questions, send an email to bike-information@stanford.edu.

4) Stanford now has 25 Zipcars in its car sharing fleet

With the largest university Zipcar fleet in the nation, Stanford has special Zipcar rates and bonuses

Zipcar is the nation's leading on-demand car sharing provider, and Stanford has the largest university Zipcar fleet in the nation. With 25 Zipcars offered at 12 Stanford locations, it is even easier to be at Stanford without owning or bringing your own car.

Stanford has negotiated special Zipcar rates and bonuses for Stanford affiliates, including hourly rates of $8 per hour for weekday rentals and $9 per hour on weekends, which include gas and insurance. The following are bonus programs Zipcar is offering to Stanford affiliates:

• All Stanford faculty, staff, and students receive $35 in driving credit for their first year when they join Zipcar with a $35 membership fee.

• Stanford Commute Club members receive an additional $8 per month in Zipcar driving credit (up to $96 per year) when they register as a Stanford Commute Club Zipcar member.

• Stanford departments receive a free Zipcar membership and Stanford RAs also receive free Zipcar memberships. (Hourly or daily charges apply for these accounts.)

For details about Zipcar at Stanford, including bonus offers, Zipcar locations, how Zipcar works, and how to join, visit http://transportation.stanford.edu/zipcar. If you have questions, send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

5) The expanded Ardenwood Park & Ride lot in Fremont opens with 350 spaces

Convenient transit and carpool access for East Bay commuters

The expansion and renovation of the Ardenwood Park & Ride lot is complete. Located at the junction of Route 84 and Ardenwood Boulevard in Fremont, the park and ride lot borders the cities of Fremont and Newark. The expanded lot has 350 parking spaces, which includes 300 free spaces and 50 reserved spaces. Reserved spaces are located next to the bus shelters and are available for a $50 monthly fee. To reserve a space, please contact Jon Twichell at jtwichel@actransit.org or 510.891.4801.

There are two ways to enter the lot – the new entrance off Ardenwood Terrace and the "old" entrance off Ardenwood Boulevard. Passengers riding the Dumbarton Express, AC Transit's Line M, and AC Transit's Line U will now be able to board buses inside the lot from a platform with two bus shelters. Buses will no longer serve the stop on the Route 84 ramp.

Stanford commuters can ride the AC Transit Line U express bus to Stanford for free by showing a valid Stanford ID. Eligible university and hospital employees can ride the Dumbarton Express for free by showing a VTA Eco Pass on their Stanford ID. If you would like a transit and/or bike commute plan to take advantage of the expanded Ardenwood Park & Ride Lot, send an email with the days, times, and origin and destination of your commute to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

The expanded transit center features two bus bays, bus shelters, lighting and security cameras, real-time bus arrival information, and bicycle parking (bike racks are available currently, and bike lockers will be installed soon, according to AC Transit).

The Ardenwood Park & Ride Lot provides a great opportunity to carpool. If you would like to find a carpool partner, visit http://transportation.stanford.edu/ridematch. Zimride at Stanford is offering a drawing for a $50 gas card for rides posted (offered or requested) before Nov. 27. Sign up and post a ride at http://zimride.stanford.edu

6) New Marguerite schedules are available

Changes to Line C are reflected in the published schedules

A new Marguerite shuttle map and schedule was published this month and is available aboard Marguerite shuttle buses, in the Parking & Transportation Services (P&TS) office, and at the Stanford Visitor Center. Changes to the published schedule include adjustments to the Line C schedule and inclusion of the Midnight Express and Shopping Express routes, which operate only during the academic year (September 2009 through mid-June 2010).

If you have questions, please send an email to marguerite@stanford.edu.

1 It is important for Parking & Transportation Services to communicate parking and alternative-transportation information to the campus. Under the 2000 General Use Permit (campus growth plan approved by Santa Clara County), the campus has a goal of "no net new peak-hour commute trips" over the life of the permit and must accommodate campus growth with a limited number of new parking spaces. Failure to achieve this goal will result in the campus being faced with costly mitigation measures.
