April Commuter Spotlight - Joe Knows!
Joe Mernyk is a Stanford Sociology PhD student living in San Francisco. He used to drive to Palo Alto, coming to work off-hours, but found he was still fighting traffic the whole way, so he switched his commute to biking and taking the Caltrain.
“Now that grad students have access to free Stanford-issued Go Passes and gas is getting more expensive, saving money on the commute from San Francisco down to campus makes a huge difference, especially on a grad student's salary,” said Joe. “Plus, the Go Pass comes in handy on the weekends when I want to see friends on campus or head down to San Jose.”
Joe bikes an impressive four miles from his home near Alamo Square to the 4th and King Street Caltrain station in the morning once or twice a week. “It’s a great way to start the day, and my partner and I get to be part of the crowd of other cyclists heading for the train station, which feels like a community of its own, and makes it safer to navigate city streets.”
Joe appreciates getting work done on the train and enjoys seeing fellow Stanford students, faculty, and staff on the ride. “I feel better not having to sit in the car for two hours every time I come to campus.”
