We have good news for commuters on both the east and west sides of the main campus: We converted ‘A’ parking spaces to ‘C’ spaces, creating more convenient parking for Stanford commuters at the lowest permit rate.
Hundreds of ‘A’ spaces have been converted to ‘C’
In November, we converted hundreds of ‘A’ permit spaces to ‘C’ spaces in the Center for Academic Medicine (CAM) Garage at 453 Quarry Road. ‘C’ spaces are now available on the two lower levels of CAM Garage.
In the Knight Management Center Parking Garage at 655 Knight Way, we converted one level of ‘A’ spaces to ‘C’ spaces on parking level three (P3). With this change, the bottom two levels of the Knight Management Parking Garage are now available to ‘C’ permit holders.
What does this mean for you?
If you commute to the main campus, these changes could improve ‘C’ parking availability throughout campus, as some ‘C’ permit holders shift to the new, more convenient spaces. This could open ‘C’ spaces in other areas of campus where they previously parked.
It also could mean some ‘A’ permit holders will switch to ‘C’ permits. However, the most convenient ‘C’ parking fills early, so ‘A’ permits still offer the greatest access to the most convenient parking throughout the day.
Switch permits at the end of the month
If you are planning to switch to a 'C' permit, keep in mind that your 'A' permit is paid for the full month of November, and there are no refunds if you return it early. If you decide to switch to a ‘C’ permit, we recommend that you cancel your permit on the last day of November, then purchase a ‘C’ permit for the month of December.
Waiting until the end of the month--or even the following month--has the added benefit of allowing you to assess whether 'C' parking at the GSB, CAM, or elsewhere will work for you based on ‘C’ parking availability at your arrival times.
Refer to “How to Return a Long-Term Parking Permit” for step-by-step instructions on returning your permit. If you are commuting part-time, use our Permit Picker tool to help you compare rates between daily and monthly permits based on the number of days you plan to park.
Requests to convert parking in other areas of campus
The decision to convert ‘A’ parking to ‘C’ spaces at the GSB and CAM was based on parking utilization data, which indicated that this change would better align parking availability with current demand. Just as we replace ‘C’ parking with ‘A’ spaces when demand rises in an area, we are now replacing ‘A’ parking with ‘C’ spaces as demand falls with increased remote working.
Although parking demand is lower than before the pandemic, it remains high on west campus, where university employees share parking with hospital employees. Demand for parking also is expected to increase with more employees returning to work in early 2022. With this in mind, we will be monitoring parking demand over the coming months and year. We will assess whether the data indicate adjustments are needed.
