Happy Earth Day: Lesley Lowe's Interview with The Earth Gratitude Project
Earth Day is here, and our Executive Director, Lesley Lowe, along with Erin Fieberling, Sustainable Mobility events and outreach lead, couldn’t have better timing. They were recently interviewed by The Earth Gratitude Project, an organization that highlights inspiring sustainability projects and leaders from around the world.
Lesley spoke about how Stanford University’s robust bike program, which is the only university to achieve four consecutive Platinum Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) designations from the League of American Bicyclists, with the latest award extending through 2027. Stanford’s bike program not only provides health benefits to the Stanford community but also helps the University meet its land-use and sustainability goals, Lesley said.
“It’s our goal to educate future generations to understand that biking is a lifestyle choice,” she said, adding that many Stanford graduates move to Palo Alto or adjacent communities, which also have a high bicycle mode share. Nearby cities are layering on Stanford’s success in creating a bicycle culture and broader cycling network, similar to what happens in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
