Here Comes the Bride (and Groom) On AE-F Line

Congrats to newlyweds Anjani Varma-Cobb and Chris Cobb, who used their sustainable commute time to plan their dream wedding.

When we ran our Valentine’s Day Commuting Couples Contest, we received lots of great entries, but one story stood out. Perhaps it was the way Anjani Varma-Cobb dreamily described commuting on the AE-F Line from Fremont to the Stanford campus with her then fiancée, Chris Cobb: “There’s always a shoulder to sleep on during the bus ride home, and we use the time to talk about our day, plan weekend activities, and even decide what’s for dinner,” she said.

Anjani, assistant director of Student Services, first learned about commuting sustainably from the East Bay eight years ago during a One-on-One Commute Consultation. She’s been taking AE-F (which supplements AC Transit's U Line transbay service) ever since, only now with Chris. Both agree that relaxing (or sleeping) on the bus is a great alternative to fighting Bay Area traffic. While their morning journey takes 30-40 minutes, the afternoon commute can take twice as long. “We might as well be comfortable on the bus, and it’s nice and quiet,” said Anjani.

“We also save a ton of money on gas and tolls,” added Chris, GSE IT administrative operations coordinator.

Turns out there was another benefit recently.  The duo used the downtime on the bus to collaborate on their nuptials, planning next steps, checking RSVP’s, and ordering online items.

That teamwork culminated in a joyful wedding last weekend in Dublin, California. The celebration was a fusion of cultures and the couple’s shared love of Star Wars. Anjani, who is Indo-Fijian, wore a traditional bridal lehenga with Bollywood-inspired elements, while Chris, who is African American, wore a traditional suit. Star Wars touches — figurine centerpieces, photo booth helmets, and a beverage-delivering R2-D2 — added to the festive atmosphere.

“It was incredible to see this thing that existed in our heads for over a year finally come to life,” said Chris. “The whole night is something Anjani and I will remember forever.”

May the force be with you on Line AE-F... and always.
