Promote Stanford’s Bike Culture by Becoming a Licensed Cycling Instructor
Do you want to encourage people to bike on the Stanford campus and beyond? Or, are you a Stanford student looking to make a difference – and extra extra income? If so, consider becoming a League Cycling Instructor (LCI). Certified through the League of American Bicyclists, LCIs promote bike culture and safety to community members.
The Silicon Valley Bike Coalition (SVBC) will offer a three-day LCI Seminar, Friday, Oct. 16, to Sunday, Oct. 18, at SRWC. The seminar will focus on teaching and demonstration techniques, both on-bike and in the classroom. The seminar, funded in part by Stanford Transportation, offers scholarships.

Stanford students, staff, and faculty.
What are LCI’s qualified to do?
Whether teaching as individuals or as part of a local bicycling or recreation organization, LCIs can teach a variety of Smart Cycling classes and help people of all ages feel more confident and secure on their bikes.
What prerequisites are required?
Smart Cycling Parts 1 and 2 classes are prerequisites. SVBC will offer a Smart Cycling Part 1 Zoom class on Weds. July 15 from 6-8:30 pm, and Smart Cycling Part 2 on Sat., Aug. 29 in San Jose from 10 am - 4 pm. Sign up for Smart Cycling Parts 1 and 2.
How can students and staff use their LCI certification to teach on campus?
Once trained, you can become a hired instructor and teach in-person bike skills classes for Stanford Transportation to staff, faculty, and students on the Stanford and SRWC campuses. Share your expertise with your peers and make an impact on the student population.
Meet Tony Le, League Cycling Instructor
Tony Le, a retired adjunct clinical professor in the Stanford Department of Pathology and current lead of the department’s Mass Spectrometry Research Group, teaches cycling classes for three bicycle coalitions: Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and Bike East Bay.
Certified as an LCI in 2018, Tony has dedicated himself to teaching underprivileged children to cycle and enjoy the outdoors rather than sit inside playing computer games.
Currently president of the Almaden Cycle Touring Club, Tony has led many cycling tours in France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, and Portugal.
“When teaching others how to cycle, be it a beginner, a safety class, or a more advanced class, these experiences help us instructors to become better cyclists. Learning never ends, and I continue to benefit from and learn from students and other instructors.
There is an incredible joy for both the student and the instructor when a student learns to balance and pedal away,” he said. “From young children to uncoordinated teenagers to women who grew up in societies where they weren’t supposed to exercise, biking opens the door to a lifetime of freedom.”
