Serra Street will close on July 23 between Galvez Street and East Campus Drive, near Schwab Residential Center. The closure enables the affected section of Serra Street to become a bicycle and pedestrian mall and will include other improvements.

In front of Encina Hall, there will be enhanced, campus-like landscaping, granite curbs and paving stones, extending the aesthetic of Serra Mall. Other enhancements include new passenger drop-off and turnaround zones at Schwab Residential Center, Encina Hall, and Galvez Street at Serra Street.

As Serra Street becomes an extension of Serra Mall as a bicycle and pedestrian zone, it will be closed to vehicular traffic with the exception of Marguerite buses. Bicyclists and pedestrians will continue to have access during construction, but they will need to follow detours and the directions of flaggers and should follow the safety tips found in the right column of the HeadsUp website.

Remaining parking on Serra Street to close

Most parking on the affected section of Serra Street closed earlier as part of this construction. The closure on July 23 affects the following remaining parking designations:

  • Fourteen (14) ‘A’ spaces
  • Six (6) 20-minute loading zone spaces.

Affected commuters should consider the following parking alternatives:

  • Knight Management Center Garage
  • Maples Lot (L-93)
  • Varsity Lot (L-97)
  • Wilbur Field Garage
  • Wilbur Lots (L-62 and L-63)

For more information, please refer to our map of the area.

Turnaround locations incorporated in the plans

Three turnaround locations have been designated for pick-up and drop-off near the new section of Serra Mall:

  • Schwab Residential Center: accessible on Serra Street via Campus Drive East
  • Encina Hall: accessible on Arguello Way via Escondido Road
  • Serra and Galvez: accessible on Galvez Street

These turnaround areas will be accessible when construction is completed. In addition, service vehicles that need to access Crothers Way will now take Escondido Road to Arguello Way instead of entering from Serra Street.

For more information on these locations and the Arguello Way service-vehicle route, please refer to our map of the area.

Marguerite shuttles continue to be re-routed

Marguerite Lines X, Y, and C were re-routed on June 25 in anticipation of this construction. These re-routes are expected to continue through late September.

The affected lines will revert to their previous routes on Serra Street after construction is complete. For more about these re-routes, please refer to our earlier article on the Serra Street closures.
