Where the Sustainable Mobility Team was in October
Our team kept busy last month. More than 45 Stanford affiliates took advantage of offerings in October. At the Fix-a-Flat classes (offered on the Stanford and SRWC campuses), participants learned learned how to fix a flat tire and perform an ABC quick check, a mnemonic reminder to check air, brakes, chain, crank, cassette, and quick-release levers before every ride. Team biking guru, Erin Fieberling, treated student cyclists to a special campus bike tour in conjunction with Climate Week, and parked the Petite Marguerite Bike Concierge on campus to give away helmets and lights to students.

Does Riding Around Campus (and in Roundabouts) Make You Anxious?
If so, the innovative new STARS Bike Safety class might be a game-changer. Just ask Charlotte Woo. Taking the online class (which takes around 20 minutes to complete) gave Charlotte, a research data manager at Stanford's John W. Gardner Center, a new level of confidence. The 360-degree drone footage of Stanford traffic really “hit home,” she said, and allowed her to have the sensory experience of entering, riding within, and exiting Stanford roundabouts.
“I liked the interactive educational Bingo game, too. It showed me both the right and the wrong ways of riding. As I played, I realized I've unknowingly made some of the mistakes shown in the video. I’m glad that I now know the ‘safe’ way to ride my bike. The various scenarios also reminded me that bicycle safety is not just about me. It is about everyone who shares the road.”
The class even motivated Charlotte to seek out Stanford’s other bike offerings, including a recent Fix-a-Flat class.
“I hope the STARS class becomes a requirement for everyone who bikes on campus, particularly since Stanford has such a huge bicycle community and e-bikes are becoming increasingly popular,” she said.
