Bike Commuting to Stanford Redwood City
If you are thinking about bike commuting to the new Stanford Redwood City campus, you may be interested to know that Redwood City was recognized as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, 2016-2020. In addition, our Stanford Bicycle Program is working with Redwood City Transportation on current and future bike improvement plans.
Consider your options
Depending on where you live, you could choose to ride from home directly to work or opt for a bike-and-train commute. If Caltrain could work for you, consider placing your bike on board and riding a shorter distance to and from Caltrain. You will still get a workout and arrive at work fully oxygenated!
Resources to ride
To help you plan your commute, we offer multiple resources on our website, including bike route options from Caltrain, safety tips, and riding and maintenance resources. You can even request a custom commute plan, and we will create a bike route map for you!
Bike events
Register for bike events at SRWC, including a guided ride to SRWC from the Redwood CIty Caltrain station, basic bike repair 101, and more.
Secure bike parking at Stanford Redwood City
In addition to bike racks, there are three secure bike cages/rooms available at the Stanford Redwood City campus for SRWC employees. Two of these facilities are open currently:
-
Recreation and Wellness Center, Room B140: located on Warrington Avenue, south of the Recreation and Wellness Center entrance.
-
ECH/A2 building: located on Barron Avenue across from the Pine Cone Children's Center
Please note: The bike cage located on the ground floor of Barron Garage (address: 2855 Bay Road, Redwood City) is currently closed for security upgrades.
Make sure to securely lock your bike in a bike cage and on a bike rack.
For the initial move-in phase, March through July, there will be a pilot “no fee” program for bike cage/room access, and the program will operate on a first-come, first-served basis until Academy Hall, the last building occupied, opens in late June or July.
Once bike cage rental fees take effect in August, rates will be consistent with our current main campus secure bike parking program. The fees currently are $6 per month, or $72 annually. We expect the application process to be available online in July.
Initially, the ID card readers will be configured to allow only SRWC employees entry. Starting in August, when there is a fee for bike cage access, then the ID card readers will be configured to only allow access to paying cyclists who are SRWC employees.
The bike cage will operate similarly to our current bike cages on the main campus. There will be bike racks inside the cage, and riders provide their own bike locks (U-shape locks recommended) to lock the bike to a bike rack inside of the cage.
For those concerned about the security of bike cages, we have found bike cages to be secure based on our years of experience with bike cages on the main campus, as well as discussions with other universities. There has been no reported significant theft in any of the bike cages over the past decade (examples of minor thefts reported include bike lights).
Additional bike parking
Bike parking will be available on the Stanford Redwood City campus in close proximity to all buildings on site. These bike racks are designed for ease of use and enable you to securely lock your bike to the bike rack. We recommend using a U-shape lock, as cable locks can be cut easily.
Clothing locker and shower facilities
Although Stanford Transportation does not plan or manage clothing lockers and shower facilities, we are providing the following information for your convenience.
Day use lockers and showers will be available at the Recreation and Wellness Center from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.. There are no reserved clothing lockers planned for the SRWC campus at this time, so lockers will be available on a first-come, first-served, day-to-day basis, and you will need to provide your own lock. Towels will be available for your use.
Bike registration
Stanford Transportation recommends registering your bike—it provides legal proof the bike belongs to you in case of loss or theft. Stanford Public Safety manages the online bike registration program as of 2020.
Secure your bike and accessories
Here are a few bike parking tips for bikes parked in racks and in bike cages:
-
Make sure you lock your bike to deter theft. The campus standard rack makes it easy to lock your front wheel and frame to the rack.
-
We recommend a U-shaped lock versus a cable lock, which can be easily cut.
-
Do not leave your bike parked overnight.
-
Remove all valuables from your parked bike to deter theft.

No riding zone
Please be aware that the Central Plaza is a “no bike riding zone.” Bicyclists will be required to dismount and walk bikes to increase safety and minimize conflict among all users in the area.
