Hertz Car Rentals vs. Zipcar

We break it down so you can decide which option is best.

Zipcar Benefits

On campus and have errands to run, lunch with car-free friends, or just need a car for a few hours? Zipcar’s flexible hourly rental rates would be the best option. Normally a Zipcar membership is $90/year but for Stanford affiliates, it costs only $35/year to have access to over 70 Zipcars at 30 Stanford locations. Drive away, and then return the Zipcar to the same reserved parking spot at the end of your reservation. It's that simple. Gas, and insurance are included in the hourly rate. You just need to fill the tank using the Zipcar fuel card inside the car when it gets to ¼ full. Customers can pick up and return a Zipcar 24/7. And remember, if you’re traveling outside the Bay Area and need a Zipcar, your discount still applies.

Hertz Benefits

If you want a car for a day or more, Hertz is likely to be the less expensive option. There are no membership fees and no mileage limit. If you have a three-day adventure on the calendar and need a rental car for several days, Hertz is the way to go. There’s also more variety to choose from as Hertz offers everything from moving trucks to electric vehicles and SUVs.
